Artists Statement
My works symbolically communicate the vital significance of the pages that make up the books of lives. Our memories, experiences, hopes, joys and disappointments are each symbolized by a page or a coil in the unfolding of our individual life journeys.
My works are made with white cloth saturated with white plaster. The cloth symbolizes all our attachments and warmth throughout life from birth (when we come into the world, and when we die). It symbolizes the different shapes of our lives; including how our memories and experiences are tightly woven together within the events of each of our lives. The plaster that I use symbolizes wisdom that strengthens our ability to cope successfully with our life experiences. The central importance of the colour white in my work reflects the wavelengths of visible light. Also, it reveals how our memories, experiences, hopes, joys and disappointments are transmitted into our lives.
My works use only the colour white. This is because white readily reflects the free range of all other colours. White can communicate both cold as well as warm protection from Winter cold. The other colours symbolically communicate the textures of our life experiences. Yet the connecting curved and straight lines are white to show all the other textures to blend into the ebb and flow of life.
